Steve simply cannot leave Eddie Munson there to die.
It takes a second for the sound to register, it’s so low and muffled, but both of the wolves snap their attention over when the crumpled body speaks from the forest floor.
“...please, go.” The voice is all gravel and agony, pushed out through split lips that seem to be attempting to instill urgency.
“Please…don’t let me hurt you, I don’t want…to hurt anyone.”
And, well.
For Steve, that’s that.

“The coat still smelled like the strongest menthols money could buy and mothballs and a little hint of asphalt. It was black as sin, its buckles were tarnished silver, and the zipper was a thorough ruination, only attached to the jacket by virtue of a fraying cotton lining that shed feathery weft fibers everywhere. The coat had seen better days, but so, too, had Eddie. It lay on his shoulders like some kind of benevolent god, like the folded wings of a dragon, over the cheap white dress shirt that had only been washed once and was already pilling gray. The sheer weight of it hurt his neck and his thin back. But it was a righteous kind of pain.
It kind of felt like armor.”
