Summary
The first time Genya Shinazugawa's life had fallen apart, he'd been six. His father attacked him and his brother and was later arrested for it.
The second time his life had fallen apart, he'd been ten. A breaking and entering that had ended with everyone aside from Sanemi, Sumi, and himself - dead.
The third time his had fallen apart, he'd been sixteen. The fabric of their world seemed to rip apart and demons and monsters that he'd only seen in fiction started attacking the world. Like a fiction novel, people started developing or awakening skills and levels to combat the monsters.
At twenty-two, Genya Shinazugawa, was on his own. His older brother had left once he'd awakened as a Hashira. His last remaining sister had been one of the first to die in the dungeon breaks. The world has broken and beaten him down so much that he can hardly feel the love that he'd used to take for granted. He doesn't have anyone. The only thing he can do with his worthless, pathetic life, is scavenge dungeons for small amounts of money to survive as he lives from paycheck to paycheck. When he finds himself in a mis-graded dungeon, going toe-to-toe with an uppermoon demon, he knows that he won't be able to survive this.

Summary
Staring at the shredded remains of the certificate he'd been so proud to be receiving less than a second ago, Genya can still hear the echoes of his older brother's words as he'd stormed the stage before leaving in the same way - careless of the carnage he left in his wake. It's not long before he's being ushered off the stage with the promise of a new certificate being shipped to him.
He doesn't want to go back to his seat - doesn't want to go back to the endless stares boring into his face. He starts walking - then, when the tears come, running. He sprints until he's breathless. He dodges other pedestrians and runs across cross-walks when it's not his turn, desperate to get away from the pain and hurt. He runs until his legs hurt. Runs until his legs give out. Keeps going until he's suddenly on a bus and then getting off at some sea-side village. He doesn't stop running until there's sand under his shoes. Until he sees waves lapping at the shore and a picturesque sunset.
AKA: Genya runs away without a word after Sanemi rips up his shooting award instead of going home - running away from his brother for the first time in his entire life.
