I wrote Eugene's view, then the lovely Lady_Rhaena inspired me to write Babe's.
Eugene can't stand to listen to the cries of his men, knowing he's been instructed to sit back from the patrol. It's when he finds out that someone is drowning that he steps in.

He ascended the Astronomy tower late one night, so late it was early, hands shaking and sweating so much that the ink on the page looked like it was blurring from tears. He hadn’t cried when he wrote the letter. He’d been stoic, it was necessary so they knew what they had done wrong. People would inevitably call him selfish and weak, but he honestly didn’t care. He was beyond caring at this point.
