Inspired by "Hollyhocking" by @Sullen_in_Love. Wonderful fic!
After Thorin unexpectedly bestows on Bilbo the cure to his nearly fatal bout with hollyhocking, Bilbo reflects on how he narrowly missed losing his beloved King Under the Mountain in the Battle of the Five Armies. Still healing from the final expulsion of the flowers from his lungs, Bilbo refuses to rest if it means saving Thorin and his nephews. Never in his life, and certainly not in those painful months of coughing up forget-me-nots, did he ever think that he would ever experience and survive hollyhocking to find that the one for whom he pined wanted to marry him. -

When Gandalf admitted that his magic could do no good against the little beasts, but promised to send help from the West, Thorin had imagined many things—a fireproof giant who would stomp the dragons flat, a cunning Ranger who would lay traps and poison—but never a plump, beardless hobbit with crinkly eyes and a wagging tongue.

“My birthday’s September twenty-second. We’re exactly a month apart.” Bilbo had grinned at him so widely then that Thorin barely registered the implication of what he’d said.
“Yours has passed too,” he frowned when he realized. “We shall have to do something for next year.”
“Next year? You’d… want me to stay through next September?” And the hope that Thorin knew Bilbo was trying to smother shone so clearly on his face that he’d wanted to throw all caution to the wind and show him exactly how close he wanted him to stay.
