Summary
Bruce’s stunned gaze gradually moves to the black figure on the floor. He stands there, unmoving, as shock and dread flood his veins. He thinks his lungs stopped working because he can’t seem to take another breath. Has he even taken a single breath since he woke up? He can’t remember. He tentatively lifts two fingers to his neck and waits a second. Then two, then three. Nothing. This can’t be real. He’s dreaming, has to be. What a cruel trick his mind decided to play on him.
He squeezes his eyes shut and reopens them, hoping the scene will change. But the figure remains, a dark blot against the floor. Gathering whatever remains of his strength, he forces his legs to move and stumbles towards the figure and the kneeling Superman. As he gets closer, he realizes with a growing horror that the figure is wearing an unmistakable dark suit of armor with a tattered bat on its chest.
