The other boy stared at him, and his gaze felt distinctly unsettling.
“You look like a serial killer.”
“...what?” If anything, Light looked more normal than the boy, and didn’t he know that that obviously isn’t something you can just say to people?
His watch beeped. His shift was up. Oh, dear God, he just wanted to go home.
“It’s always the normal ones, isn’t it? Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Dennis Nilsen…even Patrick Bateman from American Psycho.”
Light laughed. “You can’t be serious.”
“I also know that you’re very much on the verge of losing it—is it the end of your shift? It must be. And all you want to do is go home and sleep or study or whatever you do in your Normal Person Routine.” The boy grinned up at Light, frosting on his lip, and Light had the compulsive urge to wipe it away.

Not physically. But in the way that gods get tired after they realize mortals aren’t clay statues waiting to be judged, but hungry wolves with smiles like Light Yagami.
“Because I needed to know,” L said softly. “Whether it was only theory. Or if I’d already begun to want you more than I wanted the truth.”
He reached for a chocolate bar from the nightstand drawer. Bit into it like it owed him an answer.
“And?” Light asked.
L looked up.
And smiled.
“I don’t like the answer.”
Or L fell in love with the god he was supposed to unmake.
