Summary
The Fortress Team used to number in the thousands. But they were all expendable, in the end, and the Machine is EXTREMELY picky in who it decides to bring back correctly. There are only nine known compatible cases, and there have only ever been nine, since the program began fifty years ago.
The problem is, the Machine is expensive, and continued isolation and suffering has made the Teufort Nine... eccentric. The project is top secret, and despite their considerable skill set, the team cannot be trusted to stay discrete forever. So stage 2 of the project is dusted off from the fragments that remain, and the search for compatible soldiers continues.
As for the team... eh. Toss them in with the civilians, neutralise their respawn files. The world could always fit a couple more washed up crazies.
Mick Mundy hasn't found his purpose since his (now ex) fiancée had described it to him from beside his hospital bed. A concussion and a coma, apparently. And now, four years later, he stands next to the highway that caused his accident, and he has his last cigarette.

Adam finds out he has been an alternate this whole time, that he isn’t the ‘real’ Adam Murray, who was stolen away as a small child and replaced by him. However, instead of falling and losing himself, Adam runs back to Jonah and the car.
Things shift from there as Adam tries to come to terms with this new information and the resulting changes this has on him while Jonah tries to figure out what happened in that basement to make the other begin to act so strangely
