Summary
Eddard Stark returns home to Winterfell much different than when he had left almost eight years ago. Effectively only having fostered for a little over a year and a half, he had been in captivity for seven years, kept as a prized fighter in a circuit of gladiatorial arenas in the Vale run by several of the Vale Mountain Clans, funded by Tyroshi Slavers, and involving a few minor rogue Houses in the Vale. In 279AC, Eddard and some fellow slaves rose up against his captors. He was finally rescued by forces of the Vale assisting their liege lord, Lord Jon Arryn, in a crackdown against the Tyroshi Slavers and all those who were involved. Lord Jon Arryn brought his foster son back to the Eyrie to recover as well as begin to catch up on the studies he had missed during his captivity. Lord Arryn immediately informed Lord Rickard Stark upon Eddard's rescue. One year after his escape from captivity, Eddard is called home to his home in Winterfell for a reunion with his family and a betrothal to redeem House Stark's standing with two vassal houses.

Summary
The Old Gods knew the Second Long Night was coming. They could foresee it as well as the likely paths it would arrive. But their past strategy, of a great champion to unite the souls of Westeros against the White Walkers, came too close to failing last time, and they did not like their prospects of merely repeating it. The realms of Men needed an edge, a sturdy shaft to back the speartip of their champion. And if they could expand their worship, why not? For the North is vast, and full of untapped potential.
The medieval stasis has been broken. The wheels of progress begin to turn.
