John bites at his split lip the next morning when his Ma sends him into town again to get substitutes for the broken eggs. On the way back he stops at a payphone to call the number on the back of the soggy card.
“I know it’s soon,” comes Buck’s slow drawl through the receiver. “But, the wars still on, and Marge planned everything while we were - “
He tastes blood, pulls his lip into his mouth to taste the iron.
“You’ll still be my best man?” Buck asks softly.
He doesn't say ‘don’t count on it Buck’ because that sounded like I love you to him, and it never had to Gale.
“I'm a man of my word, Gale.”

It shouldn’t be that easy. John picking him up, seeing each other in civvies, humming together along the radio. And yet it is easy. Because they are carved from the same wood and their sculptor made their skin too strong, their heart too soft and their bones too fragile. Rosie likes that, he really does. He is not the kind of person to have regrets but he sometimes wonders what this war would have been like with Bucky by his side.
