Summary
Diluc may not understand a lot about love, but still he loves with his entire being, flesh and bone, heart and soul, and more. He doesn't dare label their relationship, It's just something no words in any language can describe or explain.
Jean's way of loving, he knows, is unique as well. She loves many people, but she does not love in percentages, and for each one of her lovers her love is unique, like a fingerprint of her affections. Unlike him, though, Jean is fluent in the language and the nuances of love. She labels each one with utmost care to understand what she truly feels for each one of her beloveds.
But even though Diluc can't claim to understand love like Jean does, he is not naive either. He knows that with labels come expectations, and whatever may be the words Jean uses to describe the fingertip of their love, he is not sure he can be what she expects of him.
Or: Diluc is sure in his heart that he loves Jean with his entire being, but there are lines that he is simply unable to cross.

Summary
A wall of hearts. There was a fucking wall of hearts above Alhaitham’s head.
He slammed the door shut again and stood on their doorstep, panicking. He didn’t have much time to digest the information before the door opened again, revealing Alhaitham’s confused expression and the wall of hearts above his head.
Kaveh could do nothing but stare in horror, his face pale and his hands shaking. He took a step backwards, his brain too mushed to realize that there was a step, and he started to fall backwards. He surrendered to his fall, hoping the ground would open and swallow him whole. It would be a better fate than having to deal with the idea that Alhaitham might actually like him.
Now, he understood why scholars went mad when exposed to forbidden knowledge. He felt like he was going insane.
Kaveh wakes up to the sight of hearts above everyone's head, a measurement of their affection towards him.

Summary
Truth was, Alhaitham would go along with anything that Kaveh asked of him. He’d let himself be drawn in by the vagaries of the architect for so long after all. He was simply a man vying for the bird on his windowsill and for the longest time, he couldn’t figure out why.
So he’d selfishly left it all for Kaveh to figure out, piece together and return back to him. Because brilliant, kind and emphatic Kaveh always had a heart to spare. And when it came to Alhaitham, somehow, Kaveh always knew. Kaveh always understood.
That was what he believed anyway.

So when the sky becomes overcast and the clouds rumble with Celestia’s wrath, he doesn’t bat an eye as Alhaitham abruptly excuses himself from dinner, grabs his headphones off the coffee table, and retreats to his room. This is normal, he knows; Alhaitham hates loud noises.
(What Kaveh doesn’t know is that the day after Alhaitham’s grandmother had passed, a fierce storm had overtaken the city. It had been the middle of the rainy season, so it had been nothing out of the ordinary. Kaveh, little thirteen-year-old Kaveh, hadn’t minded much. But Alhaitham had been alone— small, scared, and very much alone— for one of the first times of his life.
If Alhaitham had disliked storms then, he’d grown to hate them now, had grown to fear them, grown to loathe how powerless he felt whenever he heard the clap of thunder, or saw a stream of lightning scar the dark sky.)
