Summary
“I love it when you look at me like that.”
The sun warms Ash’s back. “Like what?”
Eiji cards through his hair, knuckle deep in fields of blonde. “Like that,” he whispers, tucking the bangs behind his ears. “Like you are seventeen again.”
Ash and Eiji talk about marriage.

Summary
Often, Eiji would wake to the sounds of keyboards clacking and papers shuffling, the sunrise dim against his bleary eyes. He’d turn to find Ash with a pen tucked between his teeth and glasses skewed across the bridge of his nose, throwing himself into his research like he did all those years ago.
Except instead of drug formulas and government conspiracies, he’d be buried in milk formulas and adoption processes; a different kind of life or death.
"Do you think about kids, Eiji?"

Summary
Packing boxes still littered corners. Newly purchased dryer sheets still clung to fresh laundry.
And fears still unfurled like the context of their palms, for Ash, unaccustomed to safety, struggled to keep himself afloat in the aftermath.
Summer rain could drown a body. “I think this,” he cracked, swallowing away the unsaid. “I think this is going to be the hard part, Eiji.”
A new house, two phonecalls, and the petals of a gift pressed between hardcovers: Ash and Eiji in the aftermath.

Summary
Eiji is leaving, and Ash is not himself.
Bundled up and bitter like a sulking Christmas present, like the pit left behind by a fruit devoured; Ash is not himself, right now. He hasn’t been himself in such a long time he isn’t quite sure what he’s like to begin with, but he just knows that he hasn’t always been like this. This…
Eiji clears his throat. Ash looks down at his feet.
Needy.
On being codependent.

Summary
“Hello.”
His voice is pleasant, pitched in a way that lays soft on Aslan’s ears. He has fluffy black hair that creeps out beneath his winter hat and flips up around his neck; Aslan traces the curls with his eyes.
He’s still warming up to these people, still unsure what his place is among them. He manages to say hello back, though, earning a genuine grin from the boy with the bird backpack. Eiji.
Growing up together in shy stutters. It takes a village.
