Summary
Although Sam and Frodo have been home for several months, Frodo has remained physically frail and wounded in spirit ever since their journey. He seems to have lost the ability to find pleasure in all aspects of life, particularly eating. But summer is coming, and the Shire is healing beautifully— Frodo hopes that he will, too. With Sam’s love and support, in addition to his blossoming friendship with Rosie, Frodo slowly learns to enjoy himself again and regains his appetite for life.

Frodo and Sam find themselves lost in The Unknown, with no easy way of getting home again. The resulting journey through the woods—through mist, monsters, and meetings with friends and strangers alike—will take all their daring, strength, and maybe some of their secrets, too.

Sam had imagined one of two things: Frodo recognizing the flowers in the garden, smiling to himself as he looked out the window, or Sam explaining them to him, dirty hands cupping white, delicate petals.
He hadn’t pictured standing here next to Frodo, looking at the green shoots and knowing that Frodo was going to leave him before any of them bloomed.
Sam finds out Frodo is going to the Undying Lands.
