“I’ll bring you here in July,” Peter says, slipping off his gloves, and hat and flexing his fingers in the blustery air. “That's when the salmon come.” He bends and dips his knees and hands into the icy water, much to Mike’s soft sound of disapproval.
“Pete, it’s freezing out here, stop —” Mike tries, but Peter moves quickly. He spies a familiar dappled form in the clear water and in one swift move, his face is plunged beneath the stream, jaws snapping shut fast around it before it can get away. He lifts a fat rainbow trout out of the river, shaking it to and fro to dispose of the excess of water that threatens to cling to his eyelashes and eyebrows as ice. He spits the writhing fish down at Mike’s feet, the man looking at him in something akin to shock.
“Fish.” He says, shrugging.
(In ten years, Ice will make jokes about how Mav must have been raised by wolves — but you see, he is entirely correct).
