“You know, sometimes,” Leonard continued, his gaze looking somewhere far off, “I wonder if I could have done something differently to prevent it all. I wish I could’ve had another chance, to do it all over again— and not be so useless.” He didn’t need to mention what he wanted to prevent; the dark memory already hung in the air around them.

He can't quite figure out what is the deal with the gloomy and ruthless pirate and why he behaves the way he does. His stay gets worse as he starts seeing the illusion of a lost friend as a side-effect of his Artifact during his dreams.

Perhaps this is fate.
Even if Klein's fate wasn't tied to Leonard's, even if he never reciprocated. Leonard's fate would forever be in the hands of Klein Moretti, would forever be a string tied around his finger no matter what universe he was in.
After all, in no universe would Leonard Mitchell not love Klein Moretti.
