Summary
It was summer, and the old man had just gotten fired again, which meant the house was smaller and meaner than ever. Daryl did what he always did: he made himself scarce. He knew how to disappear. The trick was to be quieter than the floorboards, less noticeable than a shadow. His back was a roadmap of the old man’s rage, lines and welts that had long since faded to silvery scars but still pulled tight when the air got cold. They were a part of him, a map he never asked for.

Trapped in a cycle of abuse that begins in his childhood home, Daryl navigates a series of damaging relationships that leave him shattered. After years of learning to equate love with violence and kindness with manipulation, he finally builds a quiet, solitary life for himself. He's convinced he's better off alone until a chance encounter challenges the very foundations of the walls he has built. A story about trauma, survival, and the slow, difficult journey of learning to heal.

Summary
The first punch came fast, catching Daryl in the jaw.
The kitchen was a battlefield. Daryl stood in the doorway, small and wiry, his hands curled into fists at his sides like they’d do any good. The table was overturned, its legs pointing up like a dead animal’s. His father loomed over Merle, shouting, spit flying, his words too slurred to make sense. But the fists made sense. They always did.
“Boy, you think you’re somethin’ special?” his father had snarled, turning on him. Daryl didn’t flinch. Not at first. Not until his father took a step closer, his shadow swallowing him whole. A hand struck his cheek, and the taste of blood bloomed in his mouth, coppery and thick.
His head snapped to the side as he was thrown back into reality.

Summary
Rick and Daryl's friendship at 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16, and a found family with the Grimes.
--
“Could- could Daryl stay at our house tonight, then?” Rick asked tentatively, an idea he’d been nervously formulating since the last time Daryl showed up at school pale and wincing. “Shane spends the night on school nights sometimes, and the other kids laugh at Daryl, when he comes to school hurt.”
“I hope you don’t laugh at him.”
“I don’t,” Rick said uneasily, because he also hadn’t stepped up to defend Daryl. They didn’t really hang out at school—Daryl hung out with the other kids who lived in Oak Hollow trailer park, the younger siblings of his brother’s friends. The bad kids.
