    A thick bloody gash runs from Deku’s right brow, across the bridge of his nose, over his cheek, and all the way down to the edge of his jaw. A sickening, jagged line etched diagonally over his face, wide enough to miss one of his eyes by mere milimeters.

    He almost crashes into Deku, grabbing his arm in one hand and his face in the other. Katsuki’s index and thumb press into either side of his jaw, squishing Deku’s cheeks together.

    With a voice so low he doesn’t recognize it as his own, Katsuki grinds out his words.

    “Who did this to you?”

    Or; a villain leaves a scar on Deku's face and Katsuki absolutely loses it.

    Echoes filtered down the white hall as he descended the stairs toward the locker rooms, reverberating from the pool. A whistle, the sound of breaking water. He swiped the towel over his face, paused. The sliver of cerulean catching the sinking sun pouring through the skylights, the red and white lane buoys, the burn of chlorine.

    Izuku ran a hand through his curls, snagging on a knot. The clock on the wall reminded him how late it was. A minute wouldn't hurt. He worried his lip. Just a glimpse.

    "What if we're not late bloomers?" Deku had asked him once when they were very young. “What if we don’t get our quirks? What if our quirks never come for our whole lives?”

    Katsuki hadn't been able to answer, then. All he'd known was that they'd be able to do anything together, even if the hero business tried to spit them out just because they were missing bits and pieces. That was until Deku'd told him the truth, anyway. That he'd been hiding a quirk for ten years and Katsuki had just been stupid and trusting.

    He doesn't get into UA. Deku leaves him behind and lives the dream alone. Katsuki picks up modelling and turns out to be surprisingly good at it, and after a while he thinks maybe he can make peace with never becoming a hero. This ain't a bad life, after all. There are stalkers and endless reporters but maybe he can make this work.

    For all of six years, anyway. Then he figures out his new neighbour has green eyes and cute freckles. And then, Katsuki thinks, maybe god hates him.

    He had no idea the cougar wasn’t just some wild animal or how everything in his quiet little secluded life was about to change.
