    Summary

After Project Insight, the Soldier is left without a handler, so it returns to the only one it knows is alive -- the former target, the Captain, the man it remembers kneeling for. At first he seems unfit for the job. His protocol is strange, and he does not want to use it like the other handlers did. But as the Soldier comes to know him, it begins to think he might be the best handler it has ever had.

A long story of recovery that attempts to wrestle with identity, personhood, agency, unconventional relationships, and weird consent. This verse assumes previous HTP and deals with rape recovery in a way that your therapist probably wouldn't approve of.

"Where am I? Where is this?" and he was in Brooklyn, he was on a beach, the train was shaking around him. He was in the plane, ice splintering up onto the windshield. He was in a tank, tubes trailing from his face, from his groin. Christ, he was cold. There was still ice on his fingers. He was in the Grand Canyon. He was in Times Square. This couldn't be Times Square. Where the hell was this? "Tell me! Where am I, who are you, where's—" —Bucky?

    Summary

Death is not the worst thing that can happen to a man.

To break him, you must first shatter his body—again and again and again. Then, you take his mind, his will, his name. You strip him down to something unrecognisable, reshape him into something he was never meant to be. Survival is its own kind of cruelty, and some wounds don’t heal. Some don’t even scar.

Because war doesn’t just take—it remakes. It chews men up and spits them out as something else: hollowed out, stitched haphazardly, and left to stumble forward. No side is ever truly victorious, not when the battlefield becomes a graveyard, and the survivors are left carrying its ghosts. No matter who wins, the cost is always the same: death. the weight of what can never be undone.

    All wars end the same.

    -
This is the story of Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers, and the Howling Commandos. The war they fought. The men they lost. The scars they carried. The love that blossoms, even in the darkest of places, far behind enemy lines.

Before the ice. Before the Winter Soldier.

Before it all got worse .
