he either has to come clean or let something else do it for him, and david doesn’t think he can stand watching anyone read the goodbye-letters he wrote or raid his bedroom for a bottle of tablets.
he manages to take one breath. he gets one moment of silence before every mental wall that he’s built up over the years comes crashing down at the same time.
“i’m so fucking sorry, guys-“ david cries, and it’s such a stark difference from his stance a few moments ago that everyone else in the room freezes.
(or: everyone finds out about david’s not-so-secret suicidal tendencies, and he really doesn’t want to talk about it)

scott wraps another layer of fabric around david’s forearm, evening out the creases and neatly tucking the corner so it stays in place. david winces slightly as the small motion, looking down towards the other man.
“how come you’re so good at that?” david asks.
scott hands david back his sweatshirt, standing up from his spot on the floor and turning to face his friend properly.
“let’s just say i’ve had a lot of practice.”

david watches as jason moves to sit on the couch, but doesn’t follow. he fidgets with his hands as the older man looks at him expectantly, silently running through all the things in his head that he shouldn’t say.
“i...” david begins, but falls short. how is he supposed to do this?
“you...” jason prompts, and david sighs.
“i just-" his voice breaks a little, “i just didn’t wanna be alone, cause... yeah.”

todd finishes talking, but they’re all counterfeit words. all he wants to do is use david as a distraction and the latter can’t really blame him, can he? he can’t blame him, because todd’s right - david did the exact same thing. they never actually wanted each other, they just needed to feel something other than the dull ache of heartbreak.
“you don’t love me,” david replies, “you just love the idea of me.”
