Izumi had been small the first time she told Shouta she wanted to be a hero. Barely four, maybe five. Curled in his lap in this same nest, watching Hizashi’s old field footage on a tablet screen. Summary
The glow around the little girl faded slowly, sparks dying off her skin like burnt embers.
She swayed, then collapsed forward with a choked sob.
Shouta caught her before she hit the ground.
He crouched with her in his arms, pressing her against his chest, gently adjusting his scarf to shield her from the gore around them. Her tiny body shook violently, a quiet whimper escaping her lips as she buried her face in his chest.
“I’ve got you,” he murmured.
She hiccupped.
“I’ve got you,” he repeated, firmer this time. He wasn’t sure if she understood him or not, but the words seemed to matter regardless.
