Summary
Thomas had been mesmerized by that gaze since the very start, when the Holy Father, then Cardinal Vincent Benítez, had looked up at him in that small room in the Santa Marta, hands clasped gently in his lap, with nothing to his name but a few official documents. Thomas had felt his heart skip a beat when those kind yet strong, unyielding eyes had settled into his own, Vincent’s lips quirking upwards just so.
At the end of the Conclave, Thomas Lawrence had thought the worst to be behind him. But, apparently, God wasn't entirely done with him yet. First, he'd had to deal with the late Pope denying his resignation. Then with Adeyemi and Tremblay nearly toppling the Church over. And now...now Thomas had fallen in love with the Pope.

Interpersonal matters have never been his strong suit; there’s a brashness to himself that he can’t quite shake. He attributes it to the dog-eat-dog world of growing up the youngest of eleven. He’s struggled to get past the acquaintance stage with any of the men in his cohort and it should worry him, but in all truth, he likes his solitude. Having time and space of his own is still a novelty even four years post leaving his childhood home. The majority of his free time is spent reading and listening to the silence around him.
