It is difficult for Ciara to imagine either of them as wrinkled as Lileas, but especially Nia. Ciara looks at her across the table: her hair mussed from its roller-made curls, her face bare, no pretty cosmetics to be level with a man allowed to live as-is, her silk robe like a second skin. This isn’t the Nia who Ciara had met and fallen for years ago; time has passed and made her older innately, made her wiser by her political pursuits. But she’s still Nia. Like she will be when her hair has lost its gloss and her skin its smoothness. Ciara thinks of the privilege of time, the privilege of having met someone as remarkable as Nia—the privilege of a requited love—and is struck by a pang so unbearable she has to set her fork down.

The aisles aren’t labeled; they have to go one by one to see what Nero wants. There are tears in his eyes he surreptitiously wipes away. It’s easier to go in order, so Nero starts at the leftmost aisle: preserved goods. Jams and jellies and marmalades, vegetables sliced and julienned swimming in vinegar.
“Faust, look; holy shit, sorry, look, they—there’s dreamberry jam, that ain’t been legal more than like, a month; and these pickled rain-radishes actually come from Eastern Country; do you know how hard it is to export any native fruits and veggies outta there, even if they’re pickled? These palmhearts are huge! Can palms grow that big? Oh,” Nero says, deflated, “I filled the basket up.”

If it weren’t for the small chance it would upset Faust, Nero would have swallowed the mana stone the moment he’d limped back to his room.
Nero could ask him, right here and right now, if he’d have Faust’s blessing to have the mana stone to ease his healing. The stone is Northern. Nothing good comes out of the North. But then Faust would ask why he had a Northern stone, and then. Well. He’s lying by omission for a reason.

The afternoon had been a hectic one. Downpour and flooding, thankfully, no one had gotten seriously injured, Rutile slept soundly in the next room; wood cracked within fireplace, offering a lovely tune to accompany the pouring rain. Tonight, his clinic serves as a sleepover. A jingle at door sees him getting up and putting practiced smile to use:
“Coming, coming! What can Dr. Figaro do for …” Hospitality reserved for people nurtured and raised fades to a chilling disconnect; albeit dressed differently than he remembers, there’s no way he’d forget the man now standing in his doorway. Looking as reluctant as Figaro feels. Not wanting to watch rainwater and dirt trickle inside more than it has, he encourages Oz to get inside already and make certain the door is locked. Seems his afternoon is about to get more hectic than he bargained for. The taller wizard hardly has his first foot through the door before Figaro’s resuming what he suspects will be a largely one-sided conversation. “Why are you here?”
