Medics swarmed the crash site, shouting orders. The wreck was chaos—smoke, twisted metal, the sharp stink of fuel. For a breathless instant, Bradley couldn’t see him. Then, there, crowded between a pair of medics already cutting him from his harness, Bradley spotted him. The flight suit was torn, blood seeping dark and ugly at his side. Mav’s helmet was gone, face pale beneath streaks of grit.
Bradley dropped to his knees beside him. “Dad—Dad, please. Stay with me.” His hands hovered, useless, shaking so badly he couldn’t even reach out. He couldn’t stop talking, couldn’t stop begging, his voice trembling like it had when he was twelve years old, standing at Carole’s grave.

Xie Lian wasn’t even sure who he was being sacrificed to, this time. In the past, it was almost always shared—overheard before the knife plunged, for example. But tonight, he was on a cold altar, waiting for the eventual end, and had roughly no idea why the mortals were so scared, so nervous, yet so relieved. On the other hand, he had never been granted the sight of something so beautiful before his slaughter—the wings of a silver butterfly danced right over his face, and landed gently on his nose, where blood slowly dripped. Xie Lian thought it was a very precious goodbye. Or apology, maybe. He found that he didn’t mind.
