Summary
Vindla is juggling between two conflicting duties. Daniel needs to reconcile with his father's actions. But is there really time, when the land is being consumed by hostile forces, both human and supernatural? When is it acceptable to abandon false duties?
Nevand has been under the rule of the neighbouring Svirjod for centuries, their ancestor worship quashed under the heel of an imported religion. But spreading the new religion with fire and blood came with a price; the old stories tell of a scourge of the unliving, the Hidenfolk, that emerged from the woods, almost driving back the conquerors. The knightly order of Daybreakers was formed to defeat the unliving, and for centuries, they stayed in their forest keeps, guarding the land. Many thought the ancient threat just a story, a literal Folk tale.
Now, Nevand has wrested independence from the kingdom across the sea; not long after, the Hidenfolk rose again. Vindla Falke, the daughter of a man executed as a traitor to the crown, stood up to lead the Daybreakers against the Hidenfolk, successfully driving back the scourge once more. But the Folk are not retreating; the Jarldom of Armandahl, once vassalled to her father, is still in deep trouble.
