“What do you think?”
Yelena's frown deepens.
“I’m confused.”
Val chuckles before making her way over the bed. She pulls something out from underneath the unmade bed sheets. A stuffed toy lion, its fur is matted, and there is a small hole in the seam of the neck. Valentina pulls out her comms device and barks into it.
“Bring it in.”
‘It?’ The humanising pronoun doesn't sit right in her stomach. The large steel door at the front of the door swings open, and Yelena finds herself anticipating the worst. But when the door reveals what’s behind it, a guard clutching a small boy by the armpits, she can't help but make a noise of confusion.
“Robert, hello buddy.”

The lights in here are dimmed— when they’re too bright, Spider wakes up more frightened and disoriented. It’s quiet too, the only sounds coming from the general hum of electricity and the ventilator that’s helping Spider breathe.
