Shuichi lets the silence sit, watching the contemplative look on Maki’s face, and so he sees the moment it crumbles into pure anger.
“I think they were teasing me,” she spits. “‘You can see your friend if you’re obedient.’ That’s what they’re telling us. ‘Be obedient.’”
“And if we’re not?”
The sound of clicking shoes on linoleum draws two pairs of eyes to the door of the small room as the same two nurses walk by again. They are not talking this time, but staring. Their faces twist up into a smile as they see the two patients looking at them, but neither patient reacts. Their steps, considerably slower, are the only sound heard between all four of them.
Maki waits until they are out of sight before she whispers, “Disobedient children are punished. We just need to know what their definition of punishment is.” She meets Shuichi’s eyes. “Whether it’s isolation as these levels suggest, or they follow Monokuma’s ideals.”
“And if that’s the case…”
“We won’t know when they disappear,” Shuichi finishes grimly.
“Because they’re already isolating us from each other.”

Summary
There was a stereotype, an expectation, that came with bisexuality: the thought that when, and not if, the person in question settled with their partner, the sex of their partner would then reveal their “true” sexuality—all other previous partners beforehand annulled, deemed “experimentation” over true interest.
To bypass this stage, Saihara simply never came out, and so her first partner, Akamatsu, set the expectation that she was a lesbian, plain and simple.
That is, until Ouma Kokichi came into the picture.

Recently got into this series and amazed by how well this characterizes Sara and Sou into how /I/ want them to be—in someone calculating in Sara, and someone so extremely paranoid in Sou. I didn’t have any ships while playing the game, but now I find this one to be so intriguing (and it incorporates a niche fascination of mine = femdom!). Also love Keiji’s character study—I don’t dislike him but the creepy vibes he gives off have never been so clear in context of the canon.
On a lighter note, love the flawed but sweet relationship between Kanna and Sou. He clearly doesn’t handle every situation well—and that makes it better and realistic. It’s so terribly sweet and touches on a few pain points of realistic jealously between other people monopolizing the only person you thought was in the same spot as you. Honestly, maybe there’s a reason I’m drawn to these characters… ahaha, anyway!
Also, the author’s ability to tackle an real mystery with a building relationship is flawless—little twists on canon that surprised me, and it mirrors how I feel watching someone play through this game for the first time.
All in all, impeccable fiction of impeccable canon material.

"And twisted!" Kokichi cackles and throws the pieces one final time. Shuichi zeroes in on them; this is the last part of the game. If Kokichi manages to catch all five of them—Shuichi isn't sure how, exactly, Gonggi works, but he's fairly certain it means Kokichi wins.
The wrappers fall in a tight, spinning arc, just close enough together that Kokichi has the opportunity to perfectly snatch them into the palm of his hand, and then—
—every single piece scatters across the tiles as Kokichi doubles over and begins to hack his lungs out.

LOVE canon divergent AUs and Hanahaki stories. This starts off so strong and I am completely invested in Kokichi’s plan. Already on the edge of my seat for the second chapter. Amazing how the author invokes in me a DEEP sense of concern for Kokichi off the bat, and I love Shuichi’s cautious but naturally curious nature. Hooked.

Loved the author’s other work and couldn’t believe I missed the fact there was a multi-chapter work on the account. Imagine my excitement at seeing it!
That said, I just finished reading and—AH. THIS IS WONDERFULLY PAGE-TURNING.
This story is rich with mysteries. I love the author’s use of subtlety and the jarring cutoffs right before information you desperately want to know.
Particular points I loved:
- the characterization of Shuichi as a whole
- subtle hints to Shuichi’s trans identity
- The way Miu is characterized as a workaholic—very accurate to the game—it just gives her so much more personality when you see an author focus on that about her
- Kaede and Rantaro characterized as the leaders
- So much description! I can /See/ the world created
- The CONCEPT. I feel like picking seven characters to follow is daunting but it works so well as everyone has a purpose that suits them in this team.
- Keebo and Kokichi’s brief dynamic! I tend to forget how good their dynamic is and the way it changes Kokichi’s character when you incorporate someone like Keebo with him, and then pair that next to Shuichi—tell me that doesn’t suddenly have a lightbulb going off in your head for their similar personalitiesAll in all there is so much to comment on, and it is clear this is a passion project by the author because it is so filled with love. I hope it continues, because I know I’ll be there for any update (and hopefully future works!)
