“So why are you here?” A small, brown-haired teen girl says after only a few seconds while studying him. “Woah, did you get shot in the head? That’s fucking cool, dude.”
Those words seem far too mature for a girl sounding no older than 13, but he refuses to make eye contact or even look in her direction, so he could be wrong about her age.
“Are you gonna ignore me this whole time?”
“Yep.” He answers shortly.
She lets out a heavy sigh. “You could just say it was something lame like falling down the stairs, seems like something you would do considering you’re old as shit.”
He turns to give her a glare, and she’s just smiling at him smugly. Little brat.
“Don’t you have better things to do than annoy me, kid? Where are your parents?” It’s none of his business, really. He doesn’t even care. He just wants to get this kid to shut the fuck up.
“Nope, and dead. Now are you gonna tell me what happened?”

Joel rolls his eyes as the girl chuckles and reaches a small, dainty-looking hand out toward him.
“Nice to meet you, Joel. My name is Ellie Williams. Thank you for the opportunity.”
Joel looks at her outstretched hand warily. “Opportunity for what?”
“Ellie here is the newest member of our team,” Tommy explains, “just hired her this mornin’.”

“I don’t mean to be insensitive here, Ellie. I don’t. But I think it’s important for you to be realistic about something. Your mother didn’t stop fighting for a cure just because she got pregnant. Anything could have happened to her- anything could have happened to you. But she decided that was a risk she was willing to take. Losing you for greater good was always a possibility for her. She was willing to pay the cost.”
It aches. Physical, cutting pain that wells in her throat and stings in her eyes. Confirmation of the fear that sits with her in her bed at night, curled up next to her on the ratty old mattress. It rises in her chest when the other girls cut their eyes her way before giggling behind cupped hands. It rings in her ears in the silence of the hole, an unfriendly ghost that won’t leave her alone like everyone else has.
No one wants her. No one ever has.

“Shhh, baby girl it’s just me.” Joel’s voice is low and it sounds…off, for some reason she can’t place.
“Huh?” she whispers, stumbling in the dark. She can’t see his face in the low light of the living room, but his silhouette moves from the coat rack in her direction.
“Hey sweet girl.” He coos, reaching out to cup her cheek in his hand. “Didn’t mean to wake ya’ honey.”
Ellie blinks, confused as fuck at this random sweet talk. What’s with all the pet names? And the face touching? He did it a few times after the Silver Lake incident, and once or twice when she’s had a pretty horrific night terror, but normally he’s not so…soft.
Then, the putrid smell of hard liquor hits her nostrils, and she recoils almost instantly. Blegh. Drunk.
Drunk Joel is new.
(Joel gets drunk for the first time in front of Ellie. She sees a softer side to the gruff man she’s come to know.)

The desperation is ratcheting up as he tries to clumsily shrug out of his over shirt and ball it up as a makeshift bandage to lay over her side. His dark eyes, so like Joel’s, pool with moisture, and it’s everything she can do not to look away, cheeks prickling with heat.
“You took that bite for me,” Tommy says, voice cracking and trembling with barely repressed rage and terror. “Why the fuck would you do that?”
