Summary
There was a cat hybrid in the corner of the cell, sprawled on the cold stones. His face was covered with dirt, his chest barely moving—he looked almost dead. His wrists were chained to the bars, Chris noticed.
His thoughts were interrupted when the guide approached him.“Oh, that one's not up for adoption; he’s too sick. The vet will come by and take him down this afternoon.”
Chris gasped, turning slowly toward the man. He must have heard wrong.
“Take... take him down?”
“Yeah. Like I said, he’s too sick. He’ll be dead in a week or two anyway, and we don’t want the others to get infected! Plus, it would be less painful for him, too. It’s really the best option for everyone.”
The man said it so casually, like he was talking about the weather and not killing a person.
“I’ll take him. I’ll… I want to adopt this one.”
The words jumped out of Chris’s mouth before he knew it.

Summary
A Resident Evil 5 AU with a dark twist:
“Partner...” He murmurs to himself, deep and melancholic. Hurt and grief suddenly constricts his throat, and he almost choked as his vision is clouded by the grave. The empty grave. His name etched on the tombstone Chris has sobbed on dozens and dozens of times. He failed is partner, let him die by the hands of—
Partner.
Casualties continue to mount over the long years I've struggled. One of those losses nearly consumed me, and I was incredibly lucky to have survived the aftermath, but I still feel grief’s dull teeth sunken into my soul, gnawing. Aching. More and more I find myself wondering if it's all worth fighting for. Maybe one day I'll find out.
There is one thing I do know. I have a job to do, and I'm going to see it through.
