Obviously, truth is stranger than fiction, and there’s always going to be edge cases in the real world, but for our purposes: just how realistic is Armand’s tragic backstory?
Judging by the number of retweets/reblogs on this post and others like it, fannish opinion seems to be “not very”. But honestly? It’s not that far-fetched.
Or: a fannish academic does a deep dive into the most controversial character in Daniel Molloy’s new novel.

Summary
The character of Rashid may have been a minor miscalculation, on his part. Armand did not know much about the real Rashid, did not care to find out before taking on the role. Surely he of all people could play the servant in the background, watching for and smoothing over discord. He hadn't been thinking of which buried parts of him had first learned those lessons. Had certainly not been thinking of the shock it was to see Amadeo's brown human eyes sitting again in his inhuman face.

Human AU: In the early winter of 2019, Daniel is well into the acceptance phase of his two-year-old Parkinson's diagnosis. He took a teaching job at Hunter College with an aim of seeing his kids more often.
And he did...for a while.
Now, he's settled back into old habits. He's sort of making the most of his remaining time when he's not wallowing.
Until he runs into a guy with gorgeous eyes at one of his old haunts from back in the day. Sure, the guy is one of his student, but that's probably the only complication, right? There's nothing worse on the horizon.
