El tiempo no se detiene y João lo veía avanzar, creyendo que quizás habría otro. Pero esa noche, mientras la celebración se cernía sobre él, aquel gesto no llegó. Caminó a través del campo preguntándose qué quería encontrar y cuándo lo había perdido en primer lugar.

Summary
Rumi looks down. “Your soul,” she whispers mournfully, enraptured by the blue light trickling out of his chest. “It’s beautiful.”
Jinu smiles.
Gently, he presses his forehead against hers. Rumi jolts, eyes widening, but to his relief, she doesn’t pull away.
“My soul,” he echoes softly. “It’s yours, now.”
Rumi opens her mouth, but no words escape her as she gapes at him. A tear cascades down her cheek.
“It’s mine to give, and yours to take, if you’ll have me.” His vision is blurring, and so he lets his eyes fall shut, allowing the darkness to encompass him. He forces himself to believe that the lull of sleep is accepted of his own volition.
His cheeks tingle. Rumi is holding onto his face. “No, no, no—” she grits out. Her voice is growing distant. “Stop. You can’t do this to me.” The words rush out of her in a frenzy, full of haste and distress. “Jinu.”
“Rumi,” he responds in a broken murmur. “Thank you.”
She was right. Gwi-Ma could be defeated.
He should have listened to her.
(Or: A fix-it/time-travel au where Jinu goes back to the very beginning of the story and sets things right.)

"Liam," Theo rasps out.
Liam stills. He glances over his shoulder. "I'm helping you out, just give me a minute--"
"No, I--" Theo sighs. "...I don't have any more shirts."
And it's that, of all things, that drives a laugh out of Liam as though from the end of a spike, wheezing and too-long, until it turns crazed.
"You should've--you should have fucking thought of that before doing that to your fucking spleen," says Liam with a round gesture at Theo's person.
Theo grins. It's bitter. Appropriate.
"Oops."
"Come here."
Theo holds out his arms to be lifted up from the tub before he can help himself. It's a habit ingrained into his body, deeper than lie still so she can strap you in place, deeper still than strike for the gut and aim for the throat. It fills his mind with the last time he did this, when he was five and his mother still looked at him from under her overgrown bangs with a tiredness that did not yet border on hatred.
And Liam comes closer and lifts him.

“I can explain,” she rushes out, even though she has actually no idea how to explain.
“Yeah, can you explain why I found this out from a Twitter thread instead of from you?” Bobby says. He grabs his phone and pulls up a web page, then slides the phone over to Rumi.
She freezes.
It’s not some tell-all about her secret demon identity.
She looks down at the photo, taken by some resourceful paparazzo, of Jinu waving goodbye as he slips out the back of her condo building. In the background, blurry but still obviously her, is Rumi.
