David could attribute it to the shipping delay on the order of body milk, or the vendor who called right during the morning rush to renegotiate his contract, or fact that Patrick's favorite blue pen ran out of ink and he was forced to use black. But the truth was, Patrick had just woken up in A Mood.

“Yeah,” Patrick nods. He’s pretty sure David knows the annual birthday surprise party stopped being a surprise after year two or three. David doesn’t even inflict fictional catastrophes on the café as a decoy anymore. But Patrick plays along anyway. In some ways their whole partnership is built on playing along.

“Come on, David. What’s something you’ve never done that you want to try?”
David rolls his eyes dramatically. “Let’s see, I’ve bathed in red wine at Yunessun Onsen, gotten high with the cast of One Tree Hill at the Teen Choice Awards, and been hogtied and flogged until the whole world was sensation. What more is there?” His tone is light and playful, that sparkle in his eye that says what he’s saying is true, but definitely intended to scandalise. “What about you, though? What haven’t you done that you want to?”
Patrick should have a charming, flirty-but-not-over-the-line answer. That’s how they go, this back and forth between them. Except, everything has been wiped out of his head by David’s words. “That thing you said. I’ve never done that.”
