    Summary

During one of Jasnah's regular interviews with the Heralds, Ash unexpectedly brings up a subject that cuts a little too close to the bone for Jasnah's comfort.

'While Ash marched up and down, restless and prickling with anxiety, grinding her feet with fury into the floor, Taln remained still. He sat, silent, staring at nothing without seeing anything at all.

The look was hauntingly familiar to Jasnah.

In Taln she saw a reflected part of herself. A part she kept hidden, and wished to forget, but a part of her all the same.

Occasionally, he still had lucid moments. Times when his mind cleared and his eyes fixed sharply upon her, with all the knowledge and discipline of a millennia-trained soldier. Most times he was… somewhere else.

The ardents had asked her permission to take him into their 'care' once again.

Jasnah had refused them, with a bitter taste in her mouth.

She had cited scholarly reasons, reinforcing the ardents' view of her as a godless, heartless heretic. But in truth she would have found it difficult to send even an enemy to that place. They did their best, she supposed, but their best was too close to horrifying for her to stomach.'
