If there was one thing about her that he could never get over, it was the simple fact that she'd been there. There'd been no reason for a teenage runaway from Nowhere, Mississippi to end up in an underground fighting bar in Alberta on a cold early spring night looking for a ride. He'd known her now for six years and this entire time they'd both brought up that night every chance they'd had, trying to convince each other that it had actually happened. It wasn't a history lesson, taught in a classroom. It was a legend, retold around the fire. That against all odds, she'd ended up in that rathole and walked into that bar. Of all the freaking gin joints.

After the sinking, Rose and Mr. Andrews wander the decks of the Carpathia among ghosts dead and alive, lost until they find each other. A series of vignettes.
It's her hair that he notices first, sparkling like a gemstone in a world that has turned gray. She turns as if she knows he's there, as if she can hear him call with the voice he's lost, and then he sees her eyes, blue like the vengeful, untameable sea.

On her way to tell Jack she's changed his mind, Rose runs into Thomas Andrews. For the first time in a long time, she finds herself surprised.
"If someone is waiting for you, Rose, pray don't let an old man's rambling keep you."
The kindness in his eyes makes the whole world seem benevolent. She wants to tell him that nothing about him makes her think of an old man; not the lines on his face and not the silver in his hair.
Jack is still out there, his hair wild in the wind, back turned to them. The sea air animates her, making it easy to be decisive. "There is no one waiting." And then, without even a moment's thought, she extends a hand. "Your offer stands?"

"You know what you're asking?"
"No," she answered, more honestly than he would have thought. "I know I wanna find out, though."

A new couple comes to town for the season.
"Wasn't my idea, kid," he said, laughing before passing her swiftly, collecting the bag she was carrying in a fluid motion and marching in front of her. "I still think Montreal woulda made a damn fine honeymoon."
She was left with free hands and a small backpack, making a game of setting her feet in his footsteps. "I wanted to see where you grew up!"
"You know this ain't where I grew up, right?"
"I know," she said, huffing in her trek through the snow, "but it's just as cold!"
