Isterik Week 2025 Day 2 prompt: lessons /
shadows (Vranik)‘No, my boy, not at all. A stupid boy would not put in half the effort you do into trying. Any fool can see you’re fighting your hardest.’ He stroked the boy’s hair with one palm, as Erik’s tears soaked into his shirtfront, hands fisted in the material as he buried his face in Ištván’s shoulder. ‘I am proud of you, dear boy. Few would persevere in the face of such difficulty.’ He smiled wryly. ‘Mind you, I knew how stubborn you were from the moment I attempted to send you away, so perhaps I shouldn’t be so surprised.’
Ištván takes in a small boy after the siege of a village in Moravia. Upon taking the boy as his page, he realises whilst teaching the boy to read that Erik is dyslexic. A character study in Ištván as a father figure before and then during Erik's development of romantic feelings for him.

He had eyes as the colour of pitch and a round, clean-shaven face, jawline cushioned with enough fat to make him look almost fatherly.

Erik is recruited for the 7th Cavalry following the Battle of Little Bighorn by Lieutenant Ištván Tóth. Twenty years later, they reunite when Erik is a deserter from the Mexican frontier and offers his services as a horse wrangler on the retired Ištván's ranch.

Sometimes he wonders if he wears gloves not to disguise the scars webbing silver over his already fair skin, but to cover the bloodstains he sees whenever he closes his eyes. He wears black for the same reason: in its total absence of light, it absorbs everything. Tears, blood, shit; black is black, and nothing thrown at it will change that.

Erik turned the handle of the door, revealing a pasteurized neutral grey inside - the view was obstructed by high shelves full of boxes, pillars to support the weight of the ceiling, artificial neon lighting everything and washing away the colours. [...] He took a few steps, looking at the warehouse around - on the right was an office. [...] The office chair was empty - but tilted like someone had recently been on it, laptop open.
"Hello." A voice surged from behind him.
Erik turned around to see a middle-aged man, much smaller than he was, standing with a smile on his face. [...]
"You must be the new hire, Erik, isn't it ?" The man's sultry voice asked. "I'm the manager here, Istvan Toth."

“Yield,” Henry growled.
Bartosch gasped, lips parting. The grip on his hair was tight, painful, the man didn’t recognise his strength though the gauntlets. His knee stung against the dirt and his breath caught in his throat as he looked up. Henry’s face loomed over him, unreadable.
“I yield,” he whispered between shaky breaths, quiet like a confession. His tone betrayed the sudden rush of desire that seized him. Want was thrumming in his veins, bleeding into his words.
Henry noticed the shift, the bare need that seeped from the admission. The hand in his hair hitched, the way his eyes searched his face, lingering on his lips. Henry’s grip did not relent. He ought to; their duel was concluded. But he was reluctant to release his prize from his grasp. And that, Bartosch realised, was an admission in and of itself.
