after the collapse, nothing ends clean. it just quiets. borders dissolve, factions rise. sky still blue, maybe bluer. grass still grows between the bones of gas stations and malls. some people are hoarding what’s left. some are killing for it. others, like azzi—a doctor turned primary commune medic with a quiet grief and a tenderized memory—are barely managing but seem primed to survive anyway. it’s been months now, months of living alone in a sun-drenched a-frame designed by an ex-architect from louisiana who fled north when the floods came.
then paige shows up, tall and sun-touched, with dirt on her jaw and her rifle across her back. leather boots dusty, cross necklace glinting, no family left to speak of. she was special ops, once. now, she scouts. she doesn’t say much. wouldn’t be the worst roommate. so, azzi extends shelter, and paige accepts.
a heart and war drum. they can sound the same.
paige taught her that.

Closer, and closer. The mouth of the cave was thrumming with voices, now. A terrible choir of them: her father’s barked orders, her mother’s sharp breath, Ryan’s panicked pleas.
Paige turned to Azzi, desperate. “You don’t matter to anyone the way that you matter to me.”

“Did he touch you here?” she asked, reaching out. Her fingers hovered. “Or was he too busy trying not to cum in his pants the second you sat down?”
