Sean tugged on the leash again, trying to go forward as if he were following where Nathaniel had gestured, and Nathaniel pulled him back with a small sigh. "Sean, I said heel. Do you want me to send Jean and your new friend home?" he questioned, tone offering no debate, and Sean ducked his head as he obeyed, sinking back next to Nathaniel's feet. Then, Nathaniel looked back at Jean. "I'm sorry about him," he offered, very apologetically. "I've been training him, but he was practically feral when I got him, so this is honestly a large improvement—he was a rescue, you see."
"Oh, don't worry," Jean replied, as she reached to pour herself a drink, "I've been having much the same struggle trying to get Marion to follow any commands—cats are notoriously difficult to train, of course, but I assumed I would at least be able to manage the usual, simple directions." She shook her head. "Not much, yet, though I'm hopeful. He's still getting to know me, after all." Jean fell silent for a moment, tipping her chin up and acquiring a pensive expression. "Perhaps I ought to leave him with you for a little while, Mr Trapp. You have more experience than I do in the ways of giving orders."

"Now, it is incredibly important that you keep your eyes on the projection," Edgar told him, as the wall lit up. "If you look away for even a split second, we'll have to wind it back and start over. Is that clear?"
"Mm-hm," Leo hummed, absentmindedly, while he made himself comfortable in the chair. "Am I allowed to cross my legs, or will that disrupt your data collection?"
Edgar let out a small sigh. "You can sit however you want. I just need you to watch the film—give it your full attention, and don't mess around, please, Leo."
Leo crossed his legs, and gave Edgar a teasing salute. "Yes, Doctor," he replied, with a cheeky smile. Then, he decided that he'd had his little bit of fun, and turned his eyes to the blank projection. "I'm ready when you are."

"I couldn't risk it, not with the lights out, but I still needed to eat, and I wanted to have some kind of report to give you when you woke up. I know the cutters are in the prison because as far as I'm aware, nobody bothered to take them back from the poor man trapped there." He pauses for a moment, forehead scrunching in effort as he fights to find suitable words. "The prisoner we took, a few weeks ago. During all the chaos, he somehow managed to get his hands on them, I don't know. By the time we learned he had them, there were bigger things to worry about." Marion shrugs. "I don't know if he's still alive. But I can only assume that the cutters are still there. Why wouldn't they be?"

Summary
A thrum of power strikes a note in Nathaniel's gut, and his head lightens. Sean is staring at him, as if he's waiting for an order, and the main emotion that Nathaniel feels is relief. Sean still listens to him; he's not going to die. As he returns the stare, Sean slowly sinks to the ground, into a crouch and still deeper, as if he's trying to make himself as small as possible. Now, Nathaniel towers over him, and something akin to a growl rises in Nathaniel's throat.
There's an itch beneath his skin; his flesh feels too tight, and if he wasn't facing down a monster, he would be scratching at it, trying to find the source. But, Sean seems to be deferring to him—submitting to him, his instincts purr—and that's new, and fascinating, and Nathaniel also doesn't trust him not to pounce the moment he looks away. He needs to take advantage of this opportunity while he has it. The discomforting feelings in his veins can wait.

Summary
The last dish clinks against the others in the drying rack, and Sean drains the water. It drowns out the rest of the house for a few long moments, and Sean takes the opportunity to try to compose himself. It doesn't work; his mind can still only focus on the bedroom on the second floor, the one that he and Marion share, and what he knows is happening there. He lets out a long, shuddering breath, and reaches for the ring he'd put on the windowsill.
As with a lot of things that Sean owns, his wedding ring doesn't quite fit right—it had been Marion's father's, before he'd passed, and thus it's made for a hand slightly larger than his own. It likes to slip off, if Sean isn't careful, so he always removes it. And he holds it for a moment, looking at the simple silver band and thinking about the day Marion had given it to him, and how long ago it seems. He goes to put it back on, and stops. Something about it just doesn't feel right anymore.
Sean puts it into his pocket, instead, and goes upstairs.

Then, something moves outside the door, and Nathaniel feels Marion's body stiffen. He follows suit; he falls still, and breathes only as much as he has to. He hears heavy, animal-like footfalls, and a vague sound that might be sniffing, as the light closest to the door shudders and goes out. Nathaniel's first thought is that it's a wolf, but even if a wild beast somehow managed to get into the bunker, they have firearms and explosives, and no natural creature would be allowed to run amok and strike as much fear as he sees in the way Marion quivers and flinches with every sound. [...] Marion holds his breath just a little bit too long before exhaling a sigh of relief and removing his hand from Nathaniel's mouth.
"Private," Nathaniel starts, hoarsely, as soon as he's able to, "what the hell was that?"

Nathaniel Trapp wakes up with a pounding headache and scattered memories, and Marion Collodi forcing him to keep silent. The bunker that has been their protective fortress in the war has been turned into a deadly prison by the horrifying monster stalking the halls, and the rubble blocking the only exit.In spite of the hopelessness, they make a plan to escape.
