Summary
Getting a drink with a colleague wasn’t at all unusual. It fell neatly and unremarkably within the bounds of completely expected collegial conduct. And in this case—for Severus to accept an offer from a new faculty member?—well, that was obviously just a small, harmless act of goodwill towards a freshly minted and green fellow professor.
“And I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing!” she added, in a shriller, matter-of-fact plea. “Just so you're very clear on that.”
“Good,” he said, his voice low and hoarse. “I was concerned there for a moment that you might have one of your infamous Granger plans already drawn up.”
“Well, I did,” she sighed. “Roughly, it consisted of—step one: say a bunch of emotionally naked and painfully honest things. Step two: try not to die of embarrassment. Step three: see what happens.”
He gave a low exhale that might have been a laugh. “That’s an appallingly Gryffindor strategy.”
She let out a huff of embarrassment. “Yes, I'm well aware. But I left room for improvisation, if that helps.”
