Summary
Hiccup scans the sky, but can’t see anything blotting out the stars or even obscuring the view. He doesn’t know what he was expecting, honestly. Toothless? He hasn’t seen Toothless since…since the time he and Astrid brought the kids to visit almost ten years ago.
Still, his shoulders deflate. He misses his old friend. He knows he can’t go to the Hidden World — every trip poses a risk of someone following and invading the dragon safe haven. He turns back to Zephyr. “Sorry, Zeph, I thought—AHH!”
Something sharp digs into his shoulders and with the force of a thousand suns he’s ripped from the ground with a deathly scream.
Astrid can’t find the words. She doesn’t know what to even say. She can barely wrap her head around what just happened.
Hiccup’s gone. Zephyr is gone. Taken by a dragon in the middle of the night.
Her brain starts whirring before she even knows it. Even after dark, without the helpful assistance of the sun to guide, she knows that route, knows that direction, even if she hasn’t traveled that way in years. She needs to get them back — and no one can know.

Something’s wrong.
She knows it the moment she steps outside, early in the morning. The village is the same — quiet, save some cooks and bakers preparing for breakfast once the sun is properly up, the air moist and sky still fading from night to day. Astrid, already dressed and ready to go, heads straight for the Arena.
And there’s no Hiccup. No Hiccup or Toothless.
It’s not like Hiccup to not show, with no word. If he can’t make one of their usual flights, he’ll let her know. Somehow, someway, he’ll always let her know. Something’s wrong.
“Chief!”
“Ah, Astrid! What can I—“
“Where is he?”
“Huh?”
“Hiccup,” she clarifies. “Where’s Hiccup? No one’s seen him all day.”
“Oh, uh…” Stoick shifts, scratching nervously at the back of his head. Astrid crosses her arms and raises an eyebrow, waiting. “He’s home. Said he wasn’t feeling too good, poor lass.”
Astrid rolls her eyes and turns, heading towards House Haddock. “He said he wanted to be alone, ya know!” Stoick calls after her, knowing it’s pointless.

“What?” Astrid interrupts his train of thought, smile gone, replaced with her usual neutral look. Or almost usual, because the curious crease in her eyebrows isn’t typical.
Hiccup’s eyes go wide. “Uh…”
“Why are you staring at me?” she asks. She tilts her head curiously, like she’s trying to study him. Another new thing that both makes him squirm under her gaze while melting his brain down.
“I wasn’t —“
“Hiccup.”
“I…” There’s no point in lying, not to Astrid. “I, uh, really like your smile.”

But his leg is trapped among the ship wreckage and rocks. He pulls and struggles, but every second under is another second he wastes losing air.
He quickly removes the prosthetic and kicks hard with his remaining foot, forcing himself upward.
Time passes in a blur after that.
The waves are ruthless, pushing him under, trying to trap him below the surface. It chokes him, burns his lungs and stings his eyes as he tries to survive. Tries to beat it. Tries to break free.
Trying to stay afloat with one leg is much, much harder. Much more exhausting.
But Hiccup knows he can’t quit. He knows he has to get out, somehow, because Astrid is waiting for him. Baby needs him. Even Berk needs him.
He has to survive.
