    Summary

In Hatari, Queen Nailah had spoken of other lands, continents thought lost to the great flood. Ike wanted to see them. He traced imaginary landscapes over Soren’s back at night, the patterns of his fingers making rivers and lakes, the line of Soren’s spine mountains.

“We’ll need maps, if there are any to be found,” Soren said. “Food and water. Logic dictates that we won’t speak the language, but everyone speaks the language of gold. Ike, are you listening to me?”

“Sure,” Ike yawned. “Or we can make like the hawk tribe and wing it.”

“Ike, I love you more than anything or anyone else in this world,” Soren said. “That is why I refuse to allow you to starve to death in some pathetic dinghy in the middle of the ocean.”

    --

Ike and Soren's journey is interrupted when Soren is injured by a cursed sword. With Soren poisoned and running out of time, Ike embarks on a desperate quest. Stranded in Goldoa while Soren recovers, Soren struggles with the truth about his birth, Rajaion's sacrifice, and both sides of his lineage, while Ike finds himself conflicted on how he should feel when it comes to Soren's birth family.

    Summary

“Beauty and ferocity,” Skrimir said to Ike. His eyes were fixed on Soren, even as he knocked a fist against Ike’s shoulder. “You chose your strategist well.”

Soren froze. Titania smothered a laugh behind her hand. Tibarn’s eyebrows shot up.

Ranulf put his head in his hands.

Ike just looked at Soren, a hint of a smile playing on his face, so small no one else would have seen it.

    “He’s the best,” he said.

    --

Skrimir attempts to court Soren. Ike thinks it's funny until he doesn't.

    Summary

Rajaion snapped at Ike, teeth gleaming in the gloom. Ike evaded him, quickly stepping back, but Soren saw the way his hand twitched towards the hilt of his sword.

Rajaion snarled, and Soren could see him readying to snap again.

Soren pulled his gigantic head down towards him. Rajaion obeyed with an air of long suffering; they both knew Soren could not physically move him unless he allowed himself to be moved.

“Don’t be rude,” Soren said, petting a hand down his snout. “He’s my…” he glanced at Ike and felt his cheeks heat. “He’s my friend.”
