Raya thinks of Tuk Tuk, and thinks again of the differences that stand between her and Namaari. Raya’s kin is with protectors—tough shells, fast moving. Namaari’s kin is with hunters—sharp fangs, prowling the land.
And yet, Namaari pets her cat with a soft smile. She affectionately calls it kitten when it purrs, and the cat will lay in the sun as if to soak the light through its pelt. Raya wonders what it feels like to be cared for, to see that soft side of Namaari. To only know that softer side.

His pajamas are itchy. His hands are asleep. His parents and friends are dead. The cereal is simultaneously too sweet and too bland.
Danny brings the spoon to his mouth and goes through the motions of being alive.

Ellie has a sketchbook in her pocket, and it’s burning a hole through the fabric. Whether it’s from graphite or lead or ink, it feels heavy now. The pages are curling at the edges, and it has the faint smell of smoke. The memories seem to cling to it. The cover is a worn leather and is covered in crinkles and creases.
“What’re you doing?” Joel asks her once.
Ellie curls the sketchbook close to her chest. “Nothing,” she says, defensive. “None of your business.”

It hurts. It still hurts. It feels like every nerve is on fire. It feels like you are being changed in ways you cannot comprehend, ways that are irreparable, ways that are nasty and stupid and you should have thought this out beforehand. You feel like you’re dying. Maybe you have.

“I know, but you cannot remain a ghost all the time. It's bad for our health.”
Ancient memories creaked through the phantom's mind. Memories of his first life. “You've tried,” he recalled.
Vlad shrugged. “I'm old. I've tried a lot of things I shouldn't have.”
The phantom watched sidelong as Vlad set a bottle of water on the coffee table.
“Nah,” he said. “I'm good.” He was so tired.
“The longer you put it off, the worse you'll feel when you finally get around to it. And I will be frank with you, you don't have much of a cushion to fall back on.”
Suddenly the phantom was bound on a battlefield, a sky clouded with smoke, a city ruined by his own hand. He knelt, defeated, listening to Clockwork with rapt dread as the ghost calmly informed him that he was about to lose his body after he'd already lost everything else. He squeezed his eyes shut. “Five more minutes,” he whispered.
Vlad reshuffled his features into something casual. He looked down at his breakfast and commented, “I supposed I'll call you Danny, then.”
The cereal turned pulpy and thick on the phantom's tongue. “Do it if you want to die again,” he growled.
“I see,” Vlad murmured. His neck looked incredibly crushable. “What do people usually call you?”
“Ectoplasmic slime is pretty popular.”
Vlad scowled as if that was the wrong answer.
“What do you care?” the phantom snapped.
Vlad arched an eyebrow. “I'd like to be able to refer to you when speaking to others. That's what names are usually used for.”
The phantom scoffed. It was hilarious that Vlad seemed to think that logic applied to someone like him. You had to be a person for that sort of thing to matter. You had to have others. “What’s there to tell?” he muttered.

And so you just have to keep being your best self all the time and hope that your worst self never escapes. But your worst self will get out. And you're going to be such an awful person when it does.”
