Samar was six the first time she met Rhysand. He’d been away with their father, witnessing the end of Prythian’s Second Great War during her birth, and his viewing of war and its spoils took an unexpected extension after the Dawn Court was invaded by Summer. What was meant to be six short months morphed to six long years. Samar hadn’t known what to expect. A brother was a story. His presence began and ended with the words from Mother’s mouth. And Mother spoke of him more than she breathed.
Even as a child, Samar could feel the way Rhysand's existence taunted Mother, like she could sense his rage and sorrow across the Courts. She watched that day as Rhys hugged Mother like she was something vital, and felt the air shift as the fears that haunted Mother vanished with the tears flowing down her cheeks.
