He’s been meaning to quit for a while now. Years, even. But on nights like this when he can’t sleep and his hands won’t stop shaking he can’t help but to reach for the packs that he keeps buying, chain smoking until he feels shaky and raw and vaguely ill. He returns his attention to the lighter, rubbing his thumb over the peeling decal on the front that’s faded with age, the scratches around the edges and the shoddy engravings on the back, holding it tightly in his fist as he takes another drag.
Sometimes it's hard to believe that he’s held onto it for this many years. Then again, it's not like it’s the only thing from the past he’s been clinging to.
Remus Lupin has been stuck in limbo for the last twelve years. He's never been able to move on, just barely hanging on while the world continued on without him, clinging to the past in a way that his therapist says is unhealthy. When Sirius Black is finally released from prison there isn't a doubt in his mind that he should move in with him, but is Sirius really the same person that he was all those years ago?
