Summary
It all went wrong, somehow. A miscalculation. An unconsidered variable.
Connor existed to stop a war by preventing the deviants from rising up against humans. He was meant to save lives where he could. And yet somehow that led to Hank sitting at his kitchen table, with a loaded gun by his hand.
How could Connor consider his mission a success if he allowed Hank to pull that trigger?
Human beings don't get to see how different things could have been if they'd made different choices, or taken other paths. But Connor isn't human.

He set his hand on Hank's shoulder. He was warm beneath Connor's palm. “Hank.” A plea rested heavy in the name. I need you, he wanted to tell him. I can't do this without you. We need to choose our battles.
Hank turned and looked back over his shoulder. His eyes caught Connor's, and Connor's stomach lurched as he realised it was the first they'd spoken to one another since the previous night. Hank's eyes were red rimmed and sunken, Dark circles cast the blue in shadow. His face was streaked with grime and spilled tears.
“It's okay.”
Hank's head shook in refusal. His brows drew together. He looked...
Heartbroken.
“It's not.”
