Summary
“Still hate me?” Bruce asked, pressing a rag to the jagged cut across Vance’s ribs. His knuckles were already split, blood crusted at the edges, but his touch was careful. Too careful.
Vance didn’t flinch, didn’t even blink. Just gave him that same wicked grin, teeth red from a split lip.
“You’re the one who got us jumped,” he said, tone dry as dust. “You crush three guys on the field and think they’re gonna let it slide?”
Bruce shrugged, wiping more blood than dirt off Vance’s ribs. “Didn’t know they were insane.”

Or Vance forgot he can be a fucking idiot.

Summary
Pete wins the Walk. He shoots the Major. He does everything right. He still comes back to the starting line at the end of it though.
Or
Pete is stuck doing the Walk over and over again. No matter how things end, he always comes back to the moment where he met Ray Garraty. The moment that matters most. The Walk is hard and unforgiving, but it's better than being alone. They make do.

Summary
“Uh, hi.” Ray says eventually. Filled to the brim with nerves. Which are surely audible through the line. “Is your name…Pete?”
There’s a beat of silence. “Well. I certainly hope so.”
