Then again, maybe not- Harry’s alcoholism is an open secret at the Precinct. They’d probably pull some strings and make up some bull-shit excuses for him if that ever happened. Like him, he thinks with a grim sense of irony.

Magnum gets himself in trouble, Higgins comes to get him out of it, and Magnum's a little too grateful and a little too relieved (and maybe also a little too drugged) to exercise his best judgment. He's expecting Higgins to be upset with him; he's not expecting Higgins to act like nothing happened at all.
Or: two people misunderstanding each other's motives—a love story.
