And then soft, so soft Ellie barely hears from all the way over on her staircase, ear angled down towards the slats in the railing, breath held while awaiting a reply. She needs the truth, too. She deserves the truth. After all of this. The blood on her hands, on her face, on her memories. She gets to know why. Why after all this shit, none of it was even worth it.
What Ellie once believed to be heavy, uneven breathing, she comes to realize, is quiet, fractured sobbing. “I can’t lose her,” he confesses, an omission to what Ellie already knew from the second she woke up in the back of that car, woozy and light and empty. Bare legs, cold and exposed in a hospital gown. The whole car reeked of human blood and sweat, while her skin was the cleanest, the purest, it had been in months.
“I couldn’t let ‘em take her, Tommy.”
It’s all the answer she needs.

Summary
It’s the same Joel and it isn’t - still rough around the edges with strangers and slow drawl and she still manages to sneak up on him from his right side - but he’s changed since Colorado and Utah and everything that happened in between. Ellie would almost be tempted to joke that penicillin made him nicer, but she knows it has more to do with finding her monosyllabic and covered in blood and trying to fix it because that’s what Joel does, he fixes things.
Joel fixes the light in the dining room, the drain in the sink, and she tries not to think of what his version of fixing things would’ve been in the hospital, hates that she knows he was probably lying and hates that she knows she won’t call him out on it. Right now, he’s fixing an old window air conditioning unit because otherwise she’s taken to threatening to sleep in the river if she has to try to sleep in 90 degree heat because the ancient central air of the house can’t keep up.

When Jake Lockley successfully hijacks the body from that dick Marc and that cringe nerd Steven he knows everything is going to start going his way. Killing people, joining up with loser superhero teams, and making Khonshu happy is all in a day's work for the most competent and talented alter.
Freedom's just another word for a worried wife, suspicious friends, and a rebellious alter, but it's worth it. Everybody is going to see Jake Lockley, and he won't let Marc or Steven get in the way of his starring role in his brand new life.
Turns out that it's easier to kill people than live with them. But chill out. Everything's going to be fine. Right?

Summary
Today wasn’t supposed to go like this. They knew this would be hard, they all did, but Marc and Steven had apparently hammered everything out over the course of the past several days about how this day should go. There had been discussions and agreements and arguments. The only thing lacking was notarized signatures, Marc had joked, and in retrospect, Layla realized how incredibly naive she’d been to assume that because Marc could crack jokes about a topic as serious as this one, then it was a step in the right direction. A good sign this would all go as intended. But of course, nothing was ever that easy.
Maybe he and Steven should have made their agreement legally binding, though how anyone could ever enforce that, she would never know.
