Reed felt the words catch somewhere deeper than he expected. He didn’t answer, just watched as Johnny eagerly attached more bricks, humming rocket noises under his breath.
For all his brilliance, Reed sometimes forgot the simplest equations: a boy who’d lost too much too young, a sister who became a mother before she could grow up herself, and himself—standing here now, filling spaces he hadn’t realized needed filling.
He wondered if Sue ever thought about how much Johnny had already come to rely on him.
