“I’m stealing someone’s life, Vinter!” Elara’s fists tightened. The tears were falling now—angry, frightened, helpless tears. “What if she’s out there suffering because I’ve taken her place? What if I’m the reason the kingdom is unraveling? The monsters, the war, Reynold being sent to the border—it all began after I arrived. Can’t you see that?”
She was spiraling, her voice rising with every word, trembling with guilt and desperation. Vinter stepped closer, gently, like approaching a wounded animal that might bolt.
“No, Elara. This world is not a fucking novel anymore. It’s fucking real. Just because the novel only surrounded Penelope and her love story doesn’t mean everyone else is living a happy normal life. Monsters are all over the place. Children are starving. Soldiers have to fight. It always works like that. And nothing is caused by a damn presence.”
