Chapter 1: Songs for Sabriel
Chapter Text
I remember when I first read Sabriel. It is a rare work that is unafraid to face difficult themes - death, the undead, absent parents, but always approaches difficulties as something to be understood and overcome as best as we are able to. It's approach to death and the undead fascinated me, as did the tension between wild magic, charter magic, and modern technology. Sabriel's relationship with her father tugged at my heartstrings. When I started making fanmixes, Sabriel was a work that came to mind as a possibility to create a really unique playlist. It's a difficult story to find suitable songs for, so I'm not sure I quite did it justice, but I'm pleased to have created a tribute to a story that has shaped the way I looked at fantasy since that first encounter.

I have several more finished playlists to add to this work and several dozen more that I am working on, so I'm not sure how long this will be but it will probably have quite a few chapters. Playlists take quite a bit of time for me to put together, so I will probably add new chapters about once a month or so. I may add the finished playlists faster though, just to get the ball rolling.
Chapter 2: Swansong - Ahiru & Mytho
Summary:
I love Princess Tutu. I love that Ahiru is endearingly awkward, and passionate about everything and everyone she cares about, and always selfless. I love the way the series braids together allusions to fairy tales, classical ballet, and magical girl anime into a seamless whole that is simple at face value, but has incredible depth. I love the way the roles and relationships of the four main characters shift over the course of the series. A single fanmix could not possibly do this series justice, so I have created three. The first is for the relationship that is the backbone of the series, between Ahiru and Mytho. I love the way their relationship evolves over the course of the series, and hopefully this playlist will reflect that love.

Chapter 3: The Prince and the Raven (Rue/Mytho)
Chapter Text
Rue is one of the reasons I love Princess Tutu. She starts out almost in the role of rival to Ahiru, but she's so far ahead in her dancing skill and in understanding Mytho that Ahiru doesn't even try to compete and instead puts her in the role of inspiration and possible friend. Tutu's effortless skill at dancing and sparking of true emotion in Mytho knocks Rue off that pedestal a bit and scares her, so for a time she tries to embrace the role of villain. In the end though, she decides that she loves Mytho and wants what is best for him even at the cost of her own happiness and life. And that sacrifice makes Mytho reevaluate his own choices and he chooses her in return. Her loneliness and confusion resonate with me, and that fear that no matter how hard I try and no matter how skilled I am I won't be loved in the end, but so does her belief that love is is valuable even if it is not returned and that love is worth sacrificing for also resonates with me. I'm a sucker for a happy ending, too so I'm glad her love is returned in the end.

Hopefully I will start feeling better and it won't disrupt my posting next week.
Chapter Text
What to say about Ahiru and Fakir? Theirs is one of my favorite fictional relationships of all time. They start in such different places. Ahiru is of course our awkward, selfless protagonist. Fakir at first comes across as a villain, and even after he is revealed to have noble intentions, his harsh attitudes cause a great deal of friction with Ahiru. They do eventually realize that they are both working from a place of love for and protection of Mytho but their chosen methods are so different that they still oppose each other and work at cross purposes. Things do finally change when each begins to see the other in vulnerable moments and each chooses to help rather than take advantage of these moments of weakness, and they gradually build trust and understanding and find ways to work toward their mutual goals together and offer support to each other. The level of trust and understanding they have by the end of the series is truly beautiful and the strength they draw from their relationship is inspiring. One thing that I find fascinating about their relationship is how much is developed without being spoken of directly. They quickly pick up on each others changing intentions through their changing actions and their dance together before the finale is wonderfully evocative. As someone who is fascinated by body language and communication with multiple levels of meaning, I truly appreciate this aspect of Princess Tutu. It makes excellent use of character archetypes, costuming, setting, body language, word choice, tone of voice, and musical accompaniment and stories within stories to convey multiple levels of meaning that are compelling to return to over and over and over. Please enjoy this third and final tribute to Princess Tutu. Next week I will be moving on to a new series : )

Notes:
It's been a few weeks since I've posted a new chapter, so apologies to anyone who was waiting. I spent a week working on my first podfic, which I really enjoyed making. I have another in the works already, though it's longer and it's been a little more challenging than my last one so it will take a few weeks before I get the first chapter posted. I'm planning to continue posting something every week for as long as I have finished material, either a new playlist here, or a new chapter of a podfic. Last week my regular posting schedule was interrupted by everyone in my household falling ill. I spent the entire week being sick or caring for sick people and didn't even have a spare moment to post a playlist, so my apologies for that. I hope this playlist was worth the wait, it's one of my absolute favorites : )
Chapter 5: A More Civilized Age - Obi-Wan Kenobi
Chapter Text
I have always found Obi-Wan to be the most fascinating character in the Star Wars Universe. In the Original Series, he is a desert hermit who who is clearly more learned and respected by the galaxy at large than his humble lifestyle would lead one to expect. Leia calls him a General and he is clearly no stranger to the battlefield, but it is also clear that he would rather solve his problems with cunning and personal discipline and self-sacrifice whenever possible. My most lasting impression of Obi-wan was as a man who had seen and suffered much and who responded to his sufferings and experiences with humility rather than bitterness. In this he is the foil to Darth Vader, and the difference between them is only underscored in the Prequel Series. Obi-Was was pretty tricky to find fitting songs for, so this is a bit of an odd mishmash of songs and I like some of them more than others, but I am mostly satisfied with it in the end.

Chapter 6: Wait and Hope - Edmund Dantes
Chapter Text
The Count of Monte Cristo has been my favorite book since I picked up an abridged version years ago. The characters are vibrant and dynamic, the plot is subtle and complex, the settings are varied and evocatively described. It's themes have resonated across history. It spawned quite a bit of fanfiction in it's day and has been adapted into multiple movies as well as a musical, but almost all of these adaptations change the ending of the story. I happen to greatly appreciate the original ending, so although the playlist included several songs from the musical, I rearranged some and added in several new songs to better convey the original story of the novel. I love this playlist and have listened to it obsessively since I created it : ) Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 7: Twisted Destinies (ASimon Blackquill & Athena Cykes)
Chapter Text
I have loved the Ace Attorney series for years. I at one point attempted to put together a playlist for the Original Trilogy, but it didn't hold a candle to the Phoenix Wright Musical Project's adaptation of the first game, so I haven't released it and won't unless I figure out how to improve it. I have made a couple of other playlists that I am pleased with, however! This one is for Athena and Simon. I don't ship these two, but they they clearly have a deep friendship and have had an extremely significant impact on each other's lives and a few of the songs are a little ambiguous. I am a total sucker for characters who are willing to sacrifice their lives for each other or make significant life decisions to care for or protect those they care about, so I love these two. I find this playlist very cathartic. It has its dark moments, but that just makes the happy ending that much sweeter.

Chapter 8: 13 Years Hard Time for Love - Klavier Gavin
Chapter Text
Now for something completely unlike any of the other playlists in this collection. This is a very lighthearted and fairly cheesy playlist I put together in honor of Klavier Gavin's hit song mentioned in Apollo Justice. It's a collection of 13 songs about love and law. These are some of the songs that possibly gave some inspiration to the Gavinners or that they might have considered releasing as a cover song. This turned out pretty much exactly as I hoped, but it's actually not something I listen to all that often. It's just a little to glimorous for me most of the time, but when I am in the mood for it, that is exactly why I do like it.

Back to the world of Shoujo Manga next time with my Skip Beat playlist!
Chapter 9: Skip Beat - Kyoko Mogami, Ren Tsuruga, Sho Fuwa
Chapter Text
I have been following Skip Beat for a long time! I am sad to say that the first time I picked it up I didn't make it past the first chapter because the opening scene made me think it was a typical dime-a-dozen shoujo manga. But happily, I gave it a second look as it totally breaks down that starting scenario by the end of the first chapter and goes in a completely different direction for quite a while before settling in as a sophisticated and well-thought out shoujo series that is never afraid to break the mold and surprise its readers, but tells such a timeless story that it is definitely a classic of the genre. Kyoko is both relatable and utterly unique and her journey of self-discovery to understand love in all its forms (passion for a career, friendship, familial love, and romance are all given their time in the spotlight) is well developed and a constant delight. This is one of my longer playlists, clocking in at just over three hours. The length of the playlist is necessary to do proper justice to the story since this is a long running series and takes its time in developing the characters and I am really proud that I was able to capture many of the nuances of the character development. Hopefully it's pretty clear which songs are for Sho Fuwa and which are for Tsuruga Ren. Kyoko reacts to them very differently so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. The ending has a bit of speculation, but recent developments make me think my predictions are pretty accurate : ) Enjoy!

It suits Kyoko's quirky side so well! Next up is another classic Shojo series, From Far Away. I don't think it's quite as well known as Skip Beat, but it's definitely a good one!
Chapter 10: From Far Away
Chapter Text
From Far Away is a great fantasy story and the softest, sweetest love story I have ever seen. Set against the backdrop of a unique and highly detailed fantasy world, Izark and Noriko come to depend on each other as they struggle to overcome the weight of a prophecy that could cause the whole world to devolve into war. It's an older story and less well known than some, but it is one of my favorites.

Chapter 11: This is One Piece
Chapter Text
I am a huge fan of One Piece, and have been since I stumbled across Zoro's showdown with Cabaji of the Buggy Pirates while flipping through Shounen Jump years ago. I've known for a long time that I wanted to put a playlist together that would do it justice, and it's been a massive undertaking. It's been an absolute delight to make, and is the culmination of many, many hours spent watching AMV's, listening to playlists, and looking for music that suits the story and characters. This is my longest playlist so far, running more than 7 hours and it is something of an emotional rollercoaster. There are happy songs, some angsty songs, and a whole lot of epicly awesome songs. The majority of the songs have lyrics, but there are a few instrumental songs sprinkled in there, too. I find it a great playlist to play when I need motivation to get things done. I'm going to break the playlist down here so it's a little easier to keep track of what songs are meant to correspond to which story arcs. This playlist is quite likely to get a few additions in the next few years as the story wraps up.
