Chapter 12 – The rescue
The aftermath of Lisa’s little assistance in the world-renowned search of Jennie Kim was – nicely put – completely absurd.
Not even an hour after she had sent the message requested by the president for Jennie, all hell broke loose on the internet, and soon enough, news stations from all around the world reported about her involvement in the case. Most of them blown out of proportion in a ways that were simply ridiculous.
But Lisa, Lisa was blind and deaf to all these far-fetched stories – because the only thing that held any meaning in her life whatsoever was the fact that shortly after she had sent out the requests to Jennie, the special forces were finally able to get through to Jennie.
Right there, in the middle of Lisas’ studio.
Right there, with her and President Choi standing anxiously beside.
The connection had been weak. Very weak to be precise and the operators had to work faster than lightning before the call dropped and they were left with the disconnect tone once again.
The tension in the room could’ve probably been cut with a knife then.
It was the calm before the storm.
And the storm did not take long to arrive.
A heartbeat later, chaos broke out.
The special forces and the police, as well as the operators and Mr. Choi packed up their gadgets and devices, shouting about, calling orders into phones and two-way radios – leaving Lisa dizzy with it all.
She was standing rooted to the spot, not really knowing what to do with herself even after Mr. Choi had patted her on the shoulder with a short but sincere “Well done, Ms. Manoban. We’ll take it from here.”.
And then they were gone - the closing of the door the last audible sound before everything around her became quiet again.
The silence had stretched on, for how long, Lisa didn’t know, as she just stood. Not moving a muscle, not even blinking and maybe not even breathing as the realization of what had just happened slowly made its way into her consciousness.
And the weight of it – when she had eventually, finally, wrapped her brain around it – had forced her to her knees.
The waterworks had broken loose immediately, and she cried – hard. So very hard she’d barely been able to breathe anymore.
Relief and hope and fear so heavily interwoven she hadn’t known how to handle them anymore.
But she knew then, as she does now, that it wasn’t over.
That the hard part had only just begun.
And that Jennie still needed her.
Needed her to be there with her – in whichever way possible.
So despite her indescribably big desire to run to the police station now and force her way into the rescue operation herself, she stayed.
Stayed glued to her chair and her little microphone and did the only thing she knew would truly help Jennie.
“Lili.. I need you to help me.”
“Just… keep talking to me.”

“Jennie. It’s me. Lili. Help is on the way, love. And I am here. I’m here with you. And I won’t go anywhere. I’ll stay right here with you, until you’re back home. I’ll be with you until the very end. I promise. Keep fighting. Keep fighting, love.”
