Chapter Text

Life was really about the small things in your humble opinion. For example; how many spiders can fit into one small tea cup?

You could feel the corners of your mouth lift up in a smile at the spectacle in front of you, it was a wonderful distraction and it was also best to leave the cute little monsters to their business.

Muffet, the owner of this establishment, had always been a peculiar character. Fiercely protective, blunt and maybe a bit ruthless. Although exclusively to those who ‘deserved it’. Her words, not mine.

“Muffet’s, The Original”

The golden plaque stating so sparkled along the top of the menu that hung above the showcase, where the namesake of the business was currently checking the till. With a sigh, you looked back to the table top in front of you, where the spiders were still playing with your cup.

With a soft snort of amusement you turned to look out the window beside your booth.

The Original?” It somehow still sounded so odd. It had been years and yet it was still a mindboggler, the fact that there were multiple undergrounds and barriers??

Hmmm…

But now there were so many people out there living their lives; humans, monsters, others and more.

It was a lovely summer evening and everyone was out and enjoying the sun. Children running and screaming, parents trying to keep up, humans and monsters having friendly interactions, even the more…'spikey’ monsters were looking like they were having a good day; no teeth bearing or threatening gestures, the good mood was infectious.

Except for you, anxiety was always a thing you had an on and off relationship with. It was too bright outside to see your reflection, but it didn't stop you from brushing your hands through the fur on your cheeks and smoothing over your ears, finishing by collecting your twitching tail and placing it in your lap.

With your self soothing done, all you had left was to sit and wait. The person you were supposed to meet should hopefully be here within the next five minutes. You took a breath to calm yourself. Meeting new people was always difficult but everything should be fine, you’re an adult.

Do you have responsibilities? Yes.

Do you file your taxes? Yes.

You got this! You’re an independent Female that needs no male!

Anxiety be damned!

The ring of the bell above the door instantly had you back on edge. With some quick pats you made sure not a whisker was out of place before turning to see who came in.

A skeleton monster had entered the shop, you blinked in surprise. Not to judge or anything but he did not look like what he sounded like over the phone and emails. The officer uniform, bright complexion and sky blue eyelights was not what you expected at all. Well, you still hoped this was the monster you were waiting for.

Appearances and intent when it comes to monsters are thoroughly intertwined, you get what you project. Intent was one of the biggest influences in a monster's life, you could get a basic read on someone's emotions and personality through Intent alone.

The monster you talked on the phone with felt like a log on calm water, not in a hurry and kinda just there for the ride. What entered the shop was a bright firework on a summer night, they were definitely two different monsters.

The skeleton was talking to Muffet in pleasant friendly tones, gesturing with his hands in apparent excitement. You quickly turn back to your table and spiders, it would be best not to stare just in case this wasn't the skeleton you were looking for.

That happens a lot nowadays, mistaking one monster for another, especially if you're looking for one among a sub type. Propping up your chin with a hand you looked outside again. Oh, there is a dog skateboarding down the street holding a cardboard cut out of an explosion in its mouth? That’s fun!

“Excuse Me? Are You Here For Sans!?”

You startled, fur puffing in surprise!
The voice wasn't loud persay, it was like they are projecting their voice? Looking toward the source you find the skeleton officer standing at your table side.

“Well, yes I am? How can I help you Officer?”

The officer nodded, eyelights sparkling. With a smile they tucked their hat into the nook of an elbow before offering a hand.

“I Apologize, Sans Is Currently Unavailable So He Sent Me, Lucky For You I Am The Better Option In My Opinion!”

You watched their hand for a moment before shaking it. That's an interesting texture difference. The 'bones' of their hand felt like warm ceramic against the pads of your paw. “The Name Is BB or Blue, He/Him! It’s Magnificent To Meet You!”

You can feel the small smile gracing your muzzle become more genuine as he talks. The skeleton definitely had the charm of an excitable young soul. You nodded to BB, and tilted your head at the seat across from you. “It's nice to meet you Mr. BB, my name is Reader, She/her.” You return to soothing over your twitching tail.

The skeleton laughed good naturedly as he situated himself across from you, placing his hat next to your spider filled tea cup.

“Mweh Heh, There's No Need to Call Me Mister! If What Sans Told Me Is Correct You're Looking Into Being Our New Neighbor?” Once more you nodded, ears pointing forward. “That Means We Are Practically Friends In The Making!!”

You could feel any lingering anxieties melt away in the face of the ray of sunshine in front of you, goodness he was sweet. Blue stopped for a moment, tapping his chin with a finger.

“Well That Is If You Get To Be Our Neighbor. For One Reason Or Another We Have Been Having A Hard Time Finding Anyone To Move In! But Even If You Don't Want To Come Live With Us We Can Still Be Friends! That is What Phones Are For!” He pointed up to the ceiling in assuredness, his eye sockets closed into crescent moons.

Oh no, he is adorable!!

You covered your lower face with a paw, hiding your smile.

“Of course Blue, I would adore being your friend, I’m currently in need of some quality friendships.”

Oh if you thought his eyelights were sparkling before!! They transformed into stars at your words as he leaned forward across the table, mouth opening to say something, but you stopped him with a raised finger. “Sorry, but we should really talk about the offer. What do you mean it's been hard finding someone? From the ad and what Sans said you should have quite a few people interested?” BB’s smile tilted down at one end making him look rueful while he leaned back into his chair, hands tucked in front of him under the table. You squinted at him as he started to fidget with his hidden hands.

“Well About That…”
